There are many applications that can be supported via satellite besides straightforward Internet access for email, web browsing, audio and video streaming, etc. In fact, as long as the application does not require fast interaction (such as online gaming or online trading), then satellite will work fine providing good broadband service. There are some applications, though for which satellite provides the most reliable service available. This is particularly important for applications that require to be used anywhere and anytime. SSL VPN SOLUTIONS
Virtual Private Networks (VPNs) do work over high latency satellite links. The issue is the maximum data rate that can be achieved per session over the VPN link. The satellite systems we use have inbuilt TCP acceleration functionality that overcomes the latency effects on TCP/IP protocol links (one of the main protocols used over the Internet). However, some VPN systems, such as PPTP and IPSec, encrypt the TCP/IP header disabling this acceleration feature. Hence the slow down in data rates per session.
One of the main reasons for the slow down in data rates is the size of the TCP window that is set (typically as default) on your PC or laptop. You can increase the size of this window to get faster per session links over the satellite. If you know how to do this or have the assistance of an IT person then you could try this to get good data rates over your VPN. There can be limits to the maximum data rate achieved due to other effects such as slow start, however there should be a perceivable improvement.
Of course, such a solution requires some technical knowledge and we recognise this is not something that is suitable for many people. Therefore we recommend that you consider changing your VPN system to an SSL VPN. SSL is the same protocol as used by your browser when you access online banking or shopping - HTTPS. It is recognised as a very secure VPN system and an increasing number of companies are changing to use SSL in preference to other VPN protocols.

We can provide the hardware which is housed at your company data headquarters and can support you in setting up the service.If your company has an IT department or work with an IT consultancy, you can get assistance from them to set up your link. One advantage of SSL is that you can use it anywhere you have a link to the Internet as long as you have the SSL client loaded on your laptop/netbook. A key advantage is that the SSL client software is free making this a very attractive solution. If your company uses Cisco routers and VPN units, it is likely that they either have SSL functionality loaded or can get a licence for their hardware.
